Song: (I Love You) Too, Too Much

A small tribute to military dads...

Did you know that the 3rd verse (the dad verse) of my “(I Love You) Too, Too Much” song is a shout-out to military dads?  I was sincerely moved when I was attending a conference in a hotel at the same time a military Reintegration / Redeployment program was taking place.  I empathized as the families worked through a range of emotions as some welcomed loved ones home, and others prepared to see a parent off for what could be an unknown amount of time.  If this were not difficult enough, they were receiving and processing a new report of US casualties.

On a chance series of events, some fellow music artists helped me arrange short performances for several groups of kids in their classrooms while their parents were attending to their own meetings. I've never seen kids so happy to laugh and sing.  I believe they could sense the somberness of the adult discussions, and in their own way, they seized the chance to break from the tension they were feeling in the air.  When I got home, I modified the 3rd verse to have Dad away from home. It’s just a few words, but I put that verse in there to reflect on the fact that a parent's love spans distance, and dads and kids share that special bond even if Dad is away, traveling, or not immediately available for other reasons.  Military dads, you are appreciated. Thank you for serving.

Too Too Much Blog

This song was inspired by grandma's (Peter's mom) conversations with the grandkids.  Grandma always asks, "Do you know how much you're loved?" and the kids answer, "Too too much!"   The idea is to "check-in" every once in a while with kids (and adults for that matter), to make sure that, despite any challenges or down times, everyone remembers they're still loved.  I hope you enjoy this song.

LYRICS

(I Love You) Too, Too Much
Copyright 2011-2012 Peter Apel

When my mama tucks me in at night,
She does it with a gentle, loving touch.
She asks me, do I know how much she loves me.
Before I can answer, she tells me, “Too, too much!”

Sometimes my grandma calls us on the phone,
And asks us, do we know how much we’re loved.
I shout really loud, so grandpa can hear on the speaker phone,
“Grandma and grandpa love us too, too much!”

CHORUS (Chant):
Too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too Much, too much! (repeat)

My dad is gone and far away from home,
But he always seems to come through in the clutch.
I’m so happy when he calls me on the telephone;
That’s how I know he loves me too, too much!

CHORUS (Chant):

BRIDGE:
And when I’m feeling down and kind of sad,
And I’m feeling a little empty down inside;
Those are the times I realize,
It’s not so bad, when you are loved.
Especially, when you’re loved too, too much!

Sometimes my sister hides the things, I’ve told her not to touch;
And when I broke my leg, my brother hid my crutch.
But I really think they love me in their own special way,
Just like the way I love them too, too much!

Too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too Much, too much! (repeat)
